The Orange Day Lily
Perhaps one of my favorite flowers, I used to see the Orange Day Lily occasionally on hikes back in Georgia. Its not a native species, so if you saw it in small clusters out in the forest, it could mean that there was a home or settlement in the area in the past. Occasionally, I’d find some old bricks, bits of metal or, in one case, the core of an old stone fireplace to confirm it.
For a couple weeks I’ve been admiring the effort many locals in Ballard put into their gardens, in particular these amazing examples of Orange Day Lilies on 57th.
Did you know that the flowers, tubers and even young leaves of the Orange Day Lily are edible… not that I condone uprooting a neighbor’s yard to prove the point. 🙂
